My boyfriend & I have had our Shiba Inu for about one month now. She is a little over three months. We are having a few difficulties with her going potty inside. We will take her outside & she will go potty, but as soon as we bring her in she goes again on our carpet. We don't really understand what we are doing wrong. When she goes potty outside we give her treats & tell her she is a very good girl for going potty outside. & when she goes inside we tell her she is a bad girl & show her, her mess she just made, & tell her no. Also she goes poo poo in the same spot, in our bathroom. Is there any tips that someone can give us for how to do more efficient training?

Housebreaking can certainly be one of the most frustrating parts of getting a puppy. First of all, it's not a good idea to give a puppy full range of the house until they are housebroke. It is also a good idea to confine them to part of the house that does not have carpet. It is much easier to clean a tile floor then carpet. When they do have an accident, make sure you are using a product that is especially made to clean up pet messes. If you use a regular product, it may look and smell clean to you, but your pet can still smell it and they will go there again. I've read many times that scolding a puppy for an accident is not a good idea as they really don't understand. They say it's better if you just remove the puppy from the room and clean up their accident really good.

Have you tried crate training? When we got our two girls, we bought 2 crates. We bought the wire crates that have an adjustment panel. You buy a crate that they will still be able to use as an adult, but you can adjust how much room they have. You only give them enough room to lay down comfortably. If you give them too much room, they may figure out that they can go at one end of the crate and still have room to stay away from the mess. When they first wake up, take them outside and make sure you give them plenty of time to get their business done. When you can't keep an eye on the puppy, they must stay inside the crate. When out of the crate, if you notice them sniffing around, it is a good indication that they are looking for a place to go. Take them outside and again, make sure you give them plenty of time to go potty. It can also help to give them a word that they can associate with getting their business done. For example, when they squat to pee or poop, say, go potty. Do this every time they go. Soon, you should be able to take them out and say go potty and that should give them the idea of what you want them to do.

Each puppy differs in the amount of times they need to be taken outside. Since you seem to be having lots of accidents, I would start out by taking your girl out every hour. As she gets older and gains more control, you can gradually increase the time between the times you take her out. Another thing I can think of. Is it possible that before you lived where you do, that someone who lived there before had pets? If you can confine your girl to a room without carpet, it might be a good idea to have the carpets cleaned with a product that cleans pet accidents. She may be smelling an accident that was made by a pet that lived there before you did.

Well, I hope some of this helps you out. Maybe someone else will have some other ideas for you. Good luck and let us know how things are progressing.
